Main Checkpoint on Syrian-Jordan Border Reopens, Operates Normally - Provincial Official

The Nassib checkpoint on the Syrian-Jordanian border has been reopened on Monday for civilians and transit transport in both directions and operates normally, an official from the southern Syrian province of Daraa, where the checkpoint is located, told Sputnik on Monday.

ALEPPO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th October, 2018) The Nassib checkpoint on the Syrian-Jordanian border has been reopened on Monday for civilians and transit transport in both directions and operates normally, an official from the southern Syrian province of Daraa, where the checkpoint is located, told Sputnik on Monday.

"Yes, the checkpoint has opened and there is traffic in the direction of Syria. There is also traffic from Syria. Everything is ready and works normally," the official said.

The official added that the border crossing would be open from 08:00 a.m. local time (05:00 GMT) until 04:00 p.m.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun welcomed the reopening of the crossing, saying that it would be beneficial for Lebanon's trade with Arab countries.

"This will also benefit Lebanon and reconnect it by land to its Arab depth, allowing the movement of people and goods from and to Arab countries and vice versa .

.. Opening this vital crossing after three years of closure will revive the various productive sectors and reduce the cost of exporting goods from Lebanon to Arab countries," Aoun was quoted as saying by the Lebanese National news Agency.

In 2015, the Nassib border crossing was captured by terrorists, and the Syrian government did not regain control over the checkpoint until July. The reconstruction works were launched soon afterwards. The checkpoint is vital for both countries as it allows goods to be transported from Turkey and Lebanon to the countries of the Persian Gulf through Syria and Jordan and vice versa.
