MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th October, 2018) Malaysian security forces arrested eight people, including seven foreigners, suspected of links to terrorism, media reported on Saturday citing police.
According to The Strait Times, the suspects were detained by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division in Perlis, Kuala Lumpur and Johor on September 24. The suspects were said to be linked to an Islamic learning center in Perlis, which is believed to be promoting extremist teachings.
"They are either students or former teaching staff of the centre. We made the arrests after receiving actionable intelligence that a Yemen-based terrorist group is planning to set up a learning centre in South-East Asia to promote Salafi Jihadi extremist teachings," Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said as quoted by the media outlet.
Fuzi Harun added that five Europeans and a person from the American continent were arrested in Perlis and police believes that they have links to the Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia) terrorist group. The seventh suspect of middle East origin was arrested in Kuala Lumpur and the eight man of Malaysian origin was arrested in Johor.
