MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th May, 2019) Head of the French right-wing euroskeptic National Rally party Marine Le Pen called on French President Emmanuel Macron to leave his post in case of his party's defeat in the upcoming European Parliament election.
The European Parliament election is scheduled for May 23-26. On Sunday, an Ipsos/Sopra-Steria poll showed that the National Rally may count on 22 percent of votes during the upcoming voting, while Macron's La Republique En Marche! party was supported by 21.5 percent of respondents. The election will take place amid the ongoing wave of yellow vest protests against the policy of Macron.
"This European Parliament election turns into a referendum in favor of or against Macron. I accept that but in that case it is necessary for him to act as Gen. Charles de Gaulle: to resign in case of defeat in the election," Le Pen told the LCI broadcaster on late Friday.
De Gaulle left the post of the French president in April 1969 after his proposed reform of the Senate and local governments had failed to gain popular approval during the nationwide referendum.
