Former US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has returned to the Hoover Institution think tank three months after resigning from the Defense Department, the Hoover Institution said in a press release on Tuesday
"The Hoover Institution at Stanford University is pleased to announce the appointment of Secretary Jim Mattis, US Marine Corps (Ret.), as the Davies Family Distinguished Fellow effective May 1, 2019," the release said.
The Hoover Institution explained in the release that Mattis plans to focus his research and writings on domestic and international security policy issues.
Mattis will also participate in events and programs related to military and national security topics at Hoover Institution's campuses in California and in Washington, DC, the release added.
Mattis served as a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution prior to becoming the 26th US defense secretary, when he studied strategy, innovation, the effective use of military force and the middle East, according to the release.
On December 21, Mattis announced he would step down from his position as defense secretary. His resignation came a day after the White House said the United States was withdrawing troops from Syria - a move that the former defense chief had previously said would be a strategic blunder.
The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace is a public policy think tank located at Stanford University in the US state of California.
