Medvedchuk Says Ukrainian Banks Want Him To Close Accounts Because Of US Sanctions

KIEV (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th February, 2019) Viktor Medvedchuk, the leader of the opposition Ukrainian Choice - Right of People public movement and Kiev's representative to the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine, has said that Ukrainian banks have asked him to close his accounts because of sanctions imposed on him by the United States.
Medvedchuk was sanctioned by the US Treasury Department back in 2014 along with former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Sergei Aksyonov, the head of the Russian Republic of Crimea because they allegedly posed a threat to peace and stability in Ukraine and the country's territorial integrity.
"The United States introduced sanctions against me .
.. [Meaning that] my assets and my bank accounts in the United States must be frozen and I am barred from entering the Untied States ... But I have never had any assets there, I do not have bank accounts there. But the situation becomes absurd when a Ukrainian bank, where I hold my accounts and the accounts of the organizations that I own, tells me that 'you must close the accounts because you are under US sanctions,'"Medvedchuk told the 112 Ukraina television channel on Saturday.
Medvedchuk noted that Ukrainian banks had correspondent accounts in US banks and they are afraid of falling under restrictions if they work with clients that have been sanctioned by the United States.
