Memorial To Russian General Asapov Killed In Syria Opens In Ussuriysk

A memorial to Hero of the Russian Federation, Lt. Gen. Valery Asapov, killed in the terrorist attack in Syria, was unveiled on the territory of the 5th Red Banner Army headquarters in the Russian city of Ussuriysk on Saturday, the city authorities said.
VLADIVOSTOK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) A memorial to Hero of the Russian Federation, Lt. Gen. Valery Asapov, killed in the terrorist attack in Syria, was unveiled on the territory of the 5th Red Banner Army headquarters in the Russian city of Ussuriysk on Saturday, the city authorities said.
"By opening a memorial to Hero of the Russian Federation Valery Asapov, we pay tribute to a true patriot of our Motherland. Commitment, resilience and highest professionalism allowed him to go through the hardest way from platoon commander to army commander. Without a doubt, the memorial will remind all soldiers and residents of Ussuriysk that a wonderful man and a true officer once lived among us," Alexander Ignatenko, the chief of staff of the 5th Red Banner Army, said.
The commemoration ceremony brought together the command and personnel of the 5th army, Asapov's family, representatives of the local authorities, public organizations, and cadets.
On September 23, 2017, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Asapov, who headed a group of Russian military advisers, was killed near the city of Deir ez-Zor during a mortar attack by terrorists from the Islamic State group (banned in Russia).
