AMMAN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) Activities of radical armed groups operating in Syria's Rukban refugee prevent the more than 40,000 refugees who live there from leaving, Russian Ambassador to Jordan Gleb Desyatnikov told Sputnik on Thursday.
"Yes, there are more than 40,000 people. Many of them would like to leave, but they cannot, in part due to the presence of radical armed groups in the camp," Desyatnikov said.
According to the ambassador, Russia and Jordan continued to discuss possibility of unimpeded passage of humanitarian convoys with food and medical supplies to Rukban.
"Unfortunately, there are no specific dates yet. As you know, there are many various obstacles, including those brought from the outside, brought by third parties. We have this problem, we are trying to overcome it," Desyatnikov said, asked about the probability of having a humanitarian convoy sent from Jordan to Rukban in the near future.
The Rukban camp is part of the US-controlled zone around its At-Tanf base in Syria. The World Health Organization has said that people living in Rukban were trapped there, noting deplorable conditions in the camp.
