Moldova May Call Early Elections In Fall Over Lack Of Coalition Government - President

Moldova may call early elections this fall since it is highly unlikely that the nation's political parties will be come together to form a coalition in parliament and thereby form a government, Moldovan President Igor Dodon said on Tuesday
"At this stage, in my opinion, four scenarios remain in force. The first scenario is an informal or formal coalition, between PSRM [Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova] and the ACUM bloc. The second scenario is PSRM and PDM [Democratic Party of Moldova]. The third scenario is PDM with traitors [deputies that changed their side]. The fourth scenario is early parliamentary elections ... This is the most realistic of all. The election could take place in the fall," Dodon said in an interview with local newspaper Tribuna.
He stressed that the first two scenarios were too hard to implement due to political disagreements between the parties. However, scenario three, which Dodon described as a "political salad," is more realistic but still will cause great legitimate risks as it may trigger problems in relations with foreign partners, especially with the European Union and Russia.
Additionally, it may lead to a lack of financing that will turn into crisis by fall, the president stated.
Dodon also said he was certain Moldova needed to revise the whole government system in general and find a new course for development. Otherwise, the country will once again end up in a crisis, he warned.
Four parties have won parliamentary seats in Moldova's general election, which took place on February 24. According to the commission results, the Party of Socialists, which supports Dodon, and close cooperation with Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union, gained 35 seats. The pro-European ACUM bloc got 26 seats, the Democratic Party got 30, and the SOR Party got 7. There were also three independent candidates who joined the parliament as well.
None of the parties managed to secure an absolute majority in the 101-seat Moldovan parliament. That means a new coalition must be formed in order to create a new government. According to Federal law, if parties fail to form a government within three months or pass at least one bill, the president has the right to dissolve the parliament and call early elections.
