Moldovan President, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Discuss Situation in Transnistria

Moldovan President Igor Dodon said Wednesday that he had discussed with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak the situation in the breakaway region of Transnistria and options for resolving the problem.

CHISINAU (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th September, 2018) Moldovan President Igor Dodon said Wednesday that he had discussed with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak the situation in the breakaway region of Transnistria and options for resolving the problem.

"We discussed in detail the situation in Transnistria and the prospects for the development of a dialogue in the Transnistrian settlement and expressed our support for measures to build confidence and maintain a permanent dialogue between representatives of both banks of the Dniester," Dodon wrote on Facebook after meeting with Kozak.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed issues relating to the development of Moldovan-Russian relations and cooperation, Dodon added.

"In the course of the meeting, we appreciated the successful Moldova-Russia economic forum and investment and cooperation agreements signed during the forum. We also exchanged views on the possibilities of rendering technical assistance from Russia to Moldovan agricultural producers," Dodon said.

The president confirmed the desire to achieve political and economic balance in Moldova's relations with the countries of the West and the East.

Kozak was appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin as his special representative for the development of trade and economic relations with Moldova on July 11.

Transnistria, a region with a predominantly ethnically Russian and Ukrainian population, seceded from the Soviet Republic of Moldova in 1990, fearing its possible reunion with Romania. The separation led to an armed conflict that ended in a ceasefire in July 1992, although the issue is still unresolved.

Since 1992, peacekeepers have been deployed to maintain stability in the security zone in Transnistria. The mission comprises military personnel from Moldova, Transnistria and Russia as well as Ukrainian observers.
