Moldova's Dodon Says Planning to Form New Supreme Security Council

CHISINAU (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 09th June, 2019) Igor Dodon, whose presidential powers have been temporarily transferred to Moldova's ex-Prime Minister and Democratic Party member Pavel Filip earlier on Sunday, said he was going to form the new Supreme Security Council of the republic that would become the unique authority in the country.

Earlier in the day, the Moldovan Constitutional Court ruled to transfer Dodon's presidential powers to Filip. The later then signed a degree to dissolve the parliament and set snap elections for September 6.

"Today, I will sign a decree approving the new membership of the Supreme Security Council and all decisions that will be made in the country in the near future will be in compliance with the Council's decisions," Dodon told journalists.

The Supreme Security Council includes the speaker of the parliament, the prime minister, the interior minister, the defense minister, presidential advisers, heads of some parliamentary commissions and other officials.

Dodon stressed during his briefing that there were no grounds for dissolving the parliament that had been formed absolutely legally.

"According to our clear position supported by the society, June 9 was the deadline for dissolving the parliament.

Yesterday was the legal deadline for forming the majority and the government. As for the snap election, there were no grounds for it as the parliament and the government are legitimate and they should stay like this," Dodon said.

He noted that several Moldovan foreign partners had confirmed that the government had been formed on the legal basis. In this regard, he asked them to serve as mediators in a process of a peaceful transfer of power.

"We have asked our international partners to serve as mediators in the issue of a peaceful transfer of power. Otherwise, we will have to bring people to the streets and this may happen tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, it depends on the situation," Dodon said.

On Saturday, the Party of Socialists, formerly led by Dodon, and the pro-EU ACUM bloc signed a cooperation agreement and formed a government after months of political stalemate.

Following the Constitutional Court's ruling, the newly formed Moldovan parliament said that Filip's government was illegitimate and announced its intention to appeal to the UN Security Council to help repeal the ruling.
