WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) The city of Montreal is ready to ask the government of Canada to impose a nationwide ban on handgun purchases by people who do not work for law enforcement, local media reported on Wednesday.
The city council will make an official proposal regarding Canada's gun control policies as soon as Monday, CTV said.
The motion will include the initiative to increase the limitations for buyers of hunting rifles and shotguns, because these types of weapons could be used to commit crimes.
The proposal was drafted in the wake of mass shootings and Canada which sparked debates over Ottawa's gun laws.
The most recent shooting incident occurred in the city of Fredericton last week in an apartment complex. A gunman used a long gun and left four people killed. The local police arrested the suspect and the authorities later charged him with four counts of murder.
