Moscow Has Not Proposed Belarus' 'Incorporation' Into Russia - Ambassador to Minsk

Russia has made no proposals on Belarus' "incorporation" into Russia and wants to develop mutually beneficial bilateral relations with the neighboring country, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Mikhail Babich told Sputnik on Thursday

MINSK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) Russia has made no proposals on Belarus' "incorporation" into Russia and wants to develop mutually beneficial bilateral relations with the neighboring country, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Mikhail Babich told Sputnik on Thursday.

On March 1, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that Moscow had never shown any ambition "to incorporate" Belarus into Russia, stressing that while Belarus maintains close and brotherly relations with its neighbor, it wants to "live separately."

"Concerning [hypothetical] Belarus' incorporation into the Russian Federation, there were no such initiatives. On the contrary, the Russian president has many times said - both publicly and in personal conversations with the Belarusian president - that Russia is seeking only the mutually beneficial bilateral development of the Union State [of Russia and Belarus], if our Belarusian friends want that," Babich said.

The ambassador pointed out that if Belarus had not wanted to develop the Union State, Moscow and Minsk may develop any other format of integration.

Babich also expressed Russia's readiness to help Belarus if the Western countries threatened its sovereignty via so-called color revolution and coups.

"If there is a threat from the West, similar to 'color revolutions' and coups, the Russian Federation, as a Belarusian ally, will protect the Belarusian sovereignty with all possible means, in case of the relevant request," Babich added.

Within last several months, some media reported about alleged Russian intentions to exert pressure on Belarus in order to make it become a part of Russia. The reports were refuted both by Minsk and Moscow.
