ALGIERS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Moscow is interested in expanding cooperation with Algeria in all domains and the frequency of Russian-Algerian contacts serves as a proof of the two states' aspiration to consolidate their bilateral relations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting with his Algerian counterpart, Abdelkader Messahel.

Lavrov is currently visiting Algiers as part of his tour across the Maghreb states, which will also see him travel to Morocco and Tunisia.

"This is my sixth trip to Algeria and you visited Russia last year. The intensity of our contacts reflects the aspiration of two countries' presidents to constantly improve our cooperation on the solid basis of the 2001 declaration [on Russian-Algerian cooperation] .

.. I also want to reciprocate your expression of friendship and sincere interest in advancing our relations in all directions," Lavrov said.

Later on Thursday, the foreign minister is set to attend a meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, before departing for Morocco his next stop on the tour that will last until Saturday.

Moscow and Algiers officially established diplomatic relations back in 1962. In 2001, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who is still in office paid an official visit to the Russian capital, with the two countries signing a joint declaration on strategic partnership, which gave a new impulse to bilateral cooperation.
