Moscow Not Invited to 80th Anniversary of WWII Beginning Over Int'l Law Violation - Warsaw

WARSAW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st March, 2019) The Polish authorities have not invited Russian representatives to attend the planned events timed to the 80th anniversary of World War II due to the violation of international law back in 1939, Krzysztof Szczerski, the chief of the Polish presidential cabinet, has said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the Polish authorities systematically falsified the chronicle of World War II and ignored the historical truth by organizing events to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the war without Russia's participation. The ministry's statement referred to the plans of the Polish leadership to organize in September 2019 an event to mark the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II in the format of a meeting of the current "allies and partners" of Warsaw among EU and NATO member states.

"The events related to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II will be held within a circle of states with which Poland today works for the well-being of the world on the basis of international law and respect for national sovereignty .

.. The violation of these [international] rules was common for aggressors in 1939 and remains today's biggest threat for peace," Szczerski told the PAP news agency.

The official added that Poland considered Moscow's move to refer to the chronicle of World War II in the context of the 1939 events as "problematic."

In February, Polish presidential spokesman Blazej Spychalski said, commenting on the possibility of inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the planned commemoration events, that Poland wanted to see everyone willing to pay tribute to the victims of World War II at the events.

Nazi Germany occupied Poland in September 1939, which marked the beginning of World War II. The same month, the Soviet Union gained control over parts of the country.

Hundreds of thousands of Soviet Red Army servicemen died in the fighting for the liberation of Poland from Nazi invaders.
