MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) Russia wants to improve relations with the United States and the European Union, but does not intend to leave NATO's activities near the country's borders without an answer, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday.
"We are still interested in the restoration of normal relations with the United States and the European Union based on equality and mutual accommodation.
Certainly, we will continue to respond duly to NATO's increased military activities and the deployment of the bloc's military infrastructure closer to the Russian borders," Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly expressed concerns over NATO's activities on the borders with Russia, stressing that they posed real threats to Russia's security and violated the NATO-Russia Founding Act, which banned the deployment of significant fighting forces on the territories of new member states.
