Most Europeans Say Aid to Developing Nations Key to Ending Irregular Migration - Poll

A vast majority of EU citizens believe aid to developing nations is an effective way of tackling irregular immigration, the union's official Eurobarometer survey out Tuesday found.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) A vast majority of EU citizens believe aid to developing nations is an effective way of tackling irregular immigration, the union's official Eurobarometer survey out Tuesday found.

The poll, conducted on behalf of the European Commission, also showed that 4 in 5 saw private investment as important for international development, which was a means of curbing migrant inflows.

"This shows that our proposal to deepen our economic relationship with Africa by focusing on private investment is on the right track with citizens.

We should see this as a call to do more on development, and do it now," Neven Mimica, the EU commissioner for international cooperation, said.

The poll discovered that 89 percent of those sampled supported giving aid to people in developing countries and more respondents than in 2016 wanted for it to be increased.

Asked if tackling poverty in developing countries should be an EU priority, 7 in 10 Europeans agreed that it should. Only people in the Czech Republic and Estonia said they did not feel that way.
