Mosul's Great Mosque of al-Nuri to Be Reconstructed by 2023 - Reports

DUBAI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th September, 2018) The Great Mosque of al-Nuri in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which was ruined during the city's liberation from the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia), will be reconstructed by 2023, media reported.

In April, the United Arab Emirates signed an agreement with Iraq with the participation of UNESCO, under which some $50 million will be allocated for reconstruction of the mosque known for its leaning minaret.

The schedule of the reconstruction works was adopted during the first session of the joint Iraqi-UAE commission in Abu Dhabi, the WAM news agency reported.

During the first 12 months the debris will be cleared while all the works will be completed by 2023.

The mosque was a symbolic place for the Islamic State terrorist group as in 2014 its leader Abu Bakr Baghdadi, during his public preaching there, proclaimed a caliphate across the territories controlled by the organization both in Iraq and Syria. The mosque was ruined in June 2017 when the Islamic State was defeated in the city by the Iraqi troops.
