NATO Secretary General Says Discussed With Lavrov Poland's Plans To Host US Military Base

UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th September, 2018) NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that he discussed Poland's plans to host a US military base on its territory at a Tuesday meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the UN General Assembly sidelines.
"We did discuss it during the meeting," Stoltenberg told reporters.
On September 18, US President Donald Trump said at a meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda that the United States was "considering" the establishment of a base in Poland.
The statement was a reaction to Warsaw's repeated calls for such a base, with Duda suggesting naming the potential military facility 'Fort Trump.'
Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko told Sputnik that the stationing of a US military base in Poland would mean the dismantlement of the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act, which directly bans deployment of substantial combat forces along the border on a permanent basis.
