A total of 39 percent of people surveyed in Finland, a record high since 1998, believe that it is necessary to ease make it easier for foreigners to move to the country in response to the aging of the local population, local media reported Monday citing a new poll
The poll was prepared by Taloustutkimus pollster, hired by the Finnish business and Policy Forum (Eva).
In contrast, 36 percent of respondents somewhat or completely disagreed with the need to simplify the journey of migrants to the country, according to Yle news agency.
"The most important result of the survey is that Finns' attitudes toward immigration have become more positive over both the long and short term .
.. The biggest single change is that Finns now believe that our country really needs people coming in from abroad to work," Eva research director Ilkka Haavisto said as quoted by Yle.
In turn, over half of polled Finns said that the current level of immigration was too high, remaining cautious or negative about it.
The poll was conducted between September 24 and October 4 as well as between January 31 and February 6 among 2,000 people across Finland.
