New Brexit Referendum Option for Future, Not Today - UK Labor Party Leader

LONDON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th November, 2018) The second referendum on the UK withdrawal from the European Union could be held in the country someday in the future, but not today, Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the UK Labor Party, said Sunday in an interview with the Sky news broadcaster.

Corbyn said that he did not support the ruling Conservative Party's stance on a number of issues, namely, on the Irish border. He added that he would not support UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit agreement, qualifying it as "vague."

"It's an option for the future, but it's not an option for today, because if we had a referendum tomorrow, what's it going to be on? What's the question going to be?" Corbyn said, commenting on the possibility of the second Brexit referendum.

On Thursday, May defended a draft Brexit deal in the UK Parliament's House of Commons.

The agreement faced criticism both from the opposition and from the ruling party, with several members of May's Cabinet having resigned over the disagreement with the deal. While some lawmakers called for a new referendum, May rejected the idea.

On Sunday, May voiced her belief that the draft agreement was a "right deal," calling on the parliament to approve it in order to avoid "more division' and "more uncertainty."

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a referendum in June 2016, with almost 52 percent of those who voted supporting the move. The country is expected to withdraw from the bloc by late March 2019 despite a number of stumbling blocks that impede talks, namely, the Irish border and the post-Brexit UK-EU economic relations.
