NEW YORK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 23rd April, 2019) New York will ban classic glass and steel skyscraper constructions in an effort to slash carbon emissions, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in an interview on Monday.
"We are going to ban the classic glass and steel skyscrapers which are incredibly inefficient," De Blasio told MSNBC. "If someone wants to build one of those things they can take a whole lot of steps to make it energy efficient, but we're not going to allow what we've seen in the past."
The measure comes as a part of municipal version of the recently introduced so-called "Green New Deal.
"
De Blasio said that the city will be putting strong mandates on building owners that would direct them to change their places to reduce emissions. If the owners do not comply by 2030, they will face fines, which may amount to $1 million for the biggest buildings in the city.
New York City also plans to get all of its energy from renewable sources within the next five years, according to De Blasio.
