New Zealand women to wear Hijab on Friday in solidarity with Christchurch victims

Women across New Zealand will don hijab to show support for the Muslim community affected by the recent tragedy in Christchurch.

Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 21st March, 2019) In another sign of solidarity with the Muslim community, a ‘National Scarf Day’ will be held in New Zealand on Friday.

Women across New Zealand will don hijab to show support for the Muslim community affected by the recent tragedy in Christchurch.

The women are being urged to wear a scarf to stand with the Muslim community in the country.

An excerpt from a post by Facebook page Scarves in Solidarity reads, “Get your girls friends, your sisters, your work colleagues, your sports team, your school, your church together and share a photo of you in your scarves so we can show the world that WE ARE ONE.”

Anna Thomas, one of the organisers of the event titled 'Scarves in Solidarity' said that the event was to "show Muslims in New Zealand they are not alone".

She urged women of all religions and races to come together on Friday to show that there is no room for racial abuse against women who wear the hijab.

"Women, especially those who wear the hijab, are fairly regularly fearful when they go out in the streets, and what a better way to show support and walk alongside them than to wear one," she said.

At least 50 people were killed and dozens others were left wounded in mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand's eastern city of Christchurch on Friday afternoon, marking one of the "darkest" days in the country's history.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had met the families of Friday’s terror attack victims wearing a Hijab.

Meanwhile, Ardern announced that the country will observe a two-minute silence in memory of the Christchurch martyrs and the Azaan (call to prayer) will be broadcast nationally on Friday in solidarity with the Muslim community.
