Since the beginning of the conflict in Donbas in 2014, the number of non-battle casualties among Ukraine's military personnel has exceeded 10,000, Ukrainian Chief Military Prosecutor Anatolii Matios said.
"In 4.5 years of military activities, already more than 10,000 non-battle casualties occurred," Matios said in an interview with the Ukrainian news website Liga.net
On October 28, General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced that the battle casualties of the Ukrainian military personnel exceeded 10,000.
Out of this number, as many as 2,300 servicemen died.
The conflict in Donbas started in 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics that refused to recognize the new government in Kiev, which came to power after what they considered to be a coup.
In February 2015, the warring parties signed the Minsk peace accords to end the hostilities in the region, but the situation has remained tense, with both parties accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
