The UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed regret on Tuesday over the decision of the Nicaraguan authorities to terminate the OHCHR mission in the country after the panel issued a report which alleged multiple human rights violations in the country.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 04th September, 2018) The UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed regret on Tuesday over the decision of the Nicaraguan authorities to terminate the OHCHR mission in the country after the panel issued a report which alleged multiple human rights violations in the country.
On Wednesday, the OHCHR published a report slamming violence against anti-government protesters across Nicaragua and calling the international community for action. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega's government announced shortly after that the panel was to leave the country.
"We deeply regret the Nicaraguan Government's decision to expel a team from the UN Human Rights Office, which came a day after we published a report into human rights violations and abuses committed in the country since April.
The protection of victims in Nicaragua is increasingly challenging given the limited access and oversight by the international community," statement by OHCHR Spokesperson Liz Throssell reads.
The OHCHR spokesperson added that the mission left the country on September 1, but the human rights situation in Nicaragua would be monitored remotely.
"At the same time, we remain ready to support the Nicaraguan State to fulfil its international human rights obligations. To that effect, we will continue to cooperate with regional human rights mechanisms and the international community," the spokesperson said.
Nicaragua's turmoil erupted in April when people took to the streets to protest unpopular social security reforms. This led to months of demonstrations, which saw some 300 people killed and 2,000 others injured.
