MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) An emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Executive Committee at the level of foreign ministers will take place on Friday in the Turkish city of Istanbul in the wake of last week's deadly shootings at two mosques in New Zealand.

The ministers are expected to discuss the growing number of violent attacks on Muslims in the context of the shootings during the weekly Friday prayers at the Al Noor and Linwood mosque in New Zealand's city of Christchurch.

The meeting comes at the request of Ankara and will be chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Representatives of various international organizations, including the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, are also invited to the meeting.

The shooting at mosques in Christchurch claimed the lives of 50 people and left dozens of others wounded. In his manifesto, a shooter, 28-year-old Australian national, expressed strong anti-Muslim and ant-migrant sentiment.
