MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th February, 2019) Oman considers that it is necessary to reinstate Syria in the League of Arab States (LAS), but other members of the regional organization oppose the return of Damascus, Oman's Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah said Monday.
"As for Syria, it is a state that confounded the League of Arab states. There are a lot of issues that unite Syria and Arab states. The return of Syria is necessary, but there are certain obstacles such as positions of some of the members that prevent it," the Omani minister said after his talks in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The 22-nation Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 after a war broke out in the country. Several member states then recalled their ambassadors from Syria. Last year, they began making steps to re-engage Damascus and reopen embassies in what is widely being perceived as an attempt to bring Syria back in.
