Organization Of American States Chief Recognizes Guaido As Venezuela Interim President

BUENOS AIRES (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General Luis Almagro said Wednesday he recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's interim president.

"Our congratulations to Guaido as President in charge of Venezuela. He has our our recognition to bring the country back to democracy," he tweeted.

Guaido was elected earlier this month to head the opposition-run National Assembly. He told a massive rally in Caracas on Wednesday that he swore to assume executive powers.

Almagro said he condemned the Venezuelan government for a crackdown on protesters rallying against incumbent Nicolas Maduro. At least four people have died in Caracas since demonstrations began on Tuesday night.
