Over 900 Syrian Refugees Returned Home From Abroad Over Past 24 Hours - Russian Military

More than 900 Syrian refugees have returned to their home country from Lebanon and Jordan over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides and Refugee Migration Monitoring said on Wednesday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) More than 900 Syrian refugees have returned to their home country from Lebanon and Jordan over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides and Refugee Migration Monitoring said on Wednesday.

"Over the past 24 hours, a total of 920 people returned to the Syrian Arab Republic from the territory of foreign states: 187 people (57 women and 95 children) left Lebanon for Syria via the Jaydet-Yabus and Talkalakh [checkpoints], and 733 people (220 women and 374 children) from Jordan via the Nasib [checkpoint]," the center stated in its daily bulletin.

All in all, over 163,000 refugees have returned home since June 2018, while the number of refugees who have come back since September 2015, the start of the Russian operation in Syria, is almost 400,000.

According to the bulletin, Syrian military engineering units defused some 26 explosive devices, having cleared the territory of 2 hectares, over the past 24 hours.

Syrian government has been gradually regaining control over the conflict-struck nation devastated by Islamic State (banned in Russia) extremists and militants from other fractions as the war in the region has recently entered its ninth year. Now Damascus is trying to create normal conditions for repatriating some 5.6 million refugees who, according to the UN Refugee Agency, have fled to neighboring states. Figures from the Russian military show that the majority of the refugees currently reside in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Germany and Iraq.
