PARIS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th September, 2018) France is calling on the Egyptian authorities to suspend the execution of death sentences for the affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist organization, banned in Egypt, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
On Saturday, an Egyptian court sentenced 75 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death over deadly protests of 2013.
"We are in constant dialogue with Egypt on the death penalty, we raise this issue at every opportunity, including at the highest level.
We call on the Egyptian authorities to suspend the execution of these sentences," the spokesperson told a briefing, stressing the need to abolish the capital punishment.
In July 2013, amid the wave of public discontent over the Muslim Brotherhood rule, the Egyptian army ousted President Mohammed Morsi and declared a transition period in the country. Morsi's supporters staged mass protests, demanding his reinstatement. Hundreds of Egyptians were killed in subsequent riots and clashes, including August 2013 Rabaa massacre.
