Partners of South Sudan and the region should mobilize resources to assist the country in the implementation of its peace deal, African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui said on Monday
ADDIS ABABA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th February, 2019) Partners of South Sudan and the region should mobilize resources to assist the country in the implementation of its peace deal, African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui said on Monday.
Chergui was speaking at the 32nd AU summit currently underway in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
"The revitalized agreement in South Sudan we are all happy that at the end of the day that all of the arms are quiet in that country. But I think the main problem is the support for the implementation of that agreement .
.. I want to make a call to all the friends of South Sudan and the region to mobilize resources so we don't relapse again with the violence," Chergui said during a press briefing.
South Sudan has been mired in a civil war that erupted two years after it split from Sudan in 2011. As many as 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which led to the largest refugee crisis on the continent. A fragile peace was reached in September after several failed attempts to end fighting.
