MEXICO CITY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Peru recognized Juan Guaido, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition-run parliament, as Venezuelan president, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Guaido was recognized as Venezuelan president by Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay and the United States.
"The Peruvian government recognizes and supports the president of the National Assembly, who assumed the responsibilities of the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the face of the illegitimacy of [Venezuela's legitimately elected President] Nicolas Maduro's regime," the statement said.
On Wednesday, Guaido sworn in as acting president surrounded by thousands of supporters at a rally in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas. The Supreme Court of Venezuela said that all decisions that the opposition-controlled National Assembly might take would be considered invalid and called on the prosecutor's office to take the necessary measures against the lawmakers.
