Police Chief Killed in Attack in Southern Afghanistan - Reports

Gen. Abdul Raziq, the police chief in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, was shot dead on Thursday when he and some high-ranking Afghan officials were leaving the office of the regional governor, local media reported on Thursday, citing sources.

The Tolo news broadcaster reported that the attack was carried out as Raziq and a number of Afghan officials were making their way to a helipad, after leaving the governor's office.

At least one civilian was also killed in the attack, while the head of Kandahar's National Directorate of Security was injured, the sources told the broadcaster.

The governor's bodyguards were involved in the attack, the sources claimed.

Afghanistan has long been suffering from an unstable social and political situation, with various militant groups and terror organizations operating in the country.
