NEW YORK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th March, 2019) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the United Nations Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, on Thursday to discuss the latest developments in the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement between the Yemeni warring parties, the Department of State Deputy spokesman, Robert Palladino, said in a statement.
In December, during the UN-led consultations in Sweden, the parties agreed to a ceasefire in the port city of Al Hudaydah, an exchange of prisoners and establishment of humanitarian corridors in the area.
"Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met today with UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen Martin Griffiths in Washington ... The Secretary and the Special Envoy discussed the latest timeline for redeployment of troops in Hudaydah, prisoner exchanges, and next steps in the political process," Palladino said on Thursday.
Pompeo expressed his concern over the ceasefire violations by the rebel Houthi movement in Al Hudaydah that, according to Palladino, deliberately hindered the progress reached in Sweden.
The spokesman added that Pompeo and Griffith reiterated the importance of the commitments made by the warring parties in Yemen and stressed that they needed to be implemented.
In February, Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed accused the Houthi movement of violating the peace deal by carrying out heavy weapon attacks in regions located far from the front line.
Yemen has been engulfed in a violent conflict between the government and the Houthi movement since 2015.
