US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters on Monday that he will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
UNITED NATIONS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th September, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters on Monday that he will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
When asked whether he will have a meeting with Lavrov during the General Assembly, Pompeo said, "Yes. I am sure Sergey [Lavrov] and I will have our time together."
Pompeo, however, did not specify when specifically the meeting will take place.
The United States is trying to find common ground where Washington can work effectively with Moscow, but Russia tends to act against US interests, Pompeo noted.
In August, US media reported that Pompeo has been seeking to meet for negotiations with Lavrov to ease tensions between Washington and Moscow amid impending new US sanctions against Russia and possible retaliatory measures by Russia.
The UN General Assembly session is being held September 18 through October 5.
