Pompeo, South Korean Foreign Minister Discuss North Korea In Phone Talks - Seoul

TOKYO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st January, 2019) US State Secretary Mike Pompeo and South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held a telephone conversation on Monday, discussing North Korea and cooperation between Seoul and Washington, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump discussed with North Korean Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol bilateral relations and progress on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during the latter's visit to the United States. Pompeo also met with the Korean envoy.

"[Pompeo and Kang] agreed to continue close cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the US to make sure that Vice Chairman Kim Yong-chol's latest visit to the US leads to a successful US-North Korea summit, and the agreement reached at the US-North Korea summit in Singapore in June last year is faithfully implemented ," the ministry's statement reads.

After the Friday meeting, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that US President Donald Trump would hold his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the end of next month.

The first meeting between Trump and Kim took place in June in Singapore. At the landmark talks, the two sides expressed their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
