WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will reportedly meet with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi at the State Department on Wednesday amid ongoing peace and stabilization efforts in war-torn Syria.
Last week, the two officials talked on the phone to discuss regional development in the region, including efforts to de-escalate the violence and "alleviate human suffering," according to State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert.
The meeting - which according to US media reports will take place on Wednesday afternoon - comes on the heels of a State Department announcement last week that the United States will redirect $230 million in Syria stabilization funds toward other foreign policy priorities.
Nauert in a press release on Friday said the United States would continue to fund White Helmet operations in Syria.
The decision to suspend stabilization funds, Nauert added, does not represent a change in Washingtons commitment to its goals in the middle Eastern country.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations.
The United States and its allies have been engaged in military operations against terrorists in Syria since 2014. However, the United States' operations in Syria have been conducted without the authorization of the Syrian government or the United Nations Security Council.
