Pro-Hard Brexit Tories Call for No Confidence Vote in UK Prime Minister May

A British Conservative lawmaker speaking on behalf of about 50 members of the ruling Tory party favoring a harder Brexit on Thursday requested a no confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th November, 2018) A British Conservative lawmaker speaking on behalf of about 50 members of the ruling Tory party favoring a harder Brexit on Thursday requested a no confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May.

"The draft Withdrawal Agreement presented to Parliament today has turned out to be worse than anticipated and fails to meet the promises given to the nation by the Prime Minister," Jacob Rees-Mogg, the chair of the European Research Group, wrote.

He accused the prime minister of rowing back on her pledge to never allow Northern Ireland to be treated differently from the rest of the United Kingdom, and consenting to the so-called backstop proposal, which will keep the country in EU's customs union for the duration of transition to avoid a hard Irish border.

"Annex 2. Article 3 explicitly says that we would have no authority to set our own tariffs. It is also harder to leave this backstop than it is to leave the EU," the legislator stressed.

The official letter of no confidence in Theresa May, who leads the Conservative Party, was submitted to Graham Brady, the head of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers in parliament, and copied to the prime minister.

The draft "divorce" deal was agreed Tuesday by EU and UK negotiators in Brussels and approved the next day by the cabinet despite reports of dissent. It will now go to parliament which was promised a meaningful vote on the provisional agreement.
