Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed in a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron the need to launch the Syrian constitutional committee as soon as possible, the Kremlin said on Saturday
"The [conversation] focused on the situation in Syria. Vladimir Putin informed [Macron] about the agreements reached on February 14 in Sochi at a meeting of the leaders of the guarantor states of the Astana process aimed at facilitating the Syrian settlement. Both sides stressed the need to promote the intra-Syrian political dialogue, first and foremost [the need to] launch the work of the constitutional committee as soon as possible," the Kremlin's statement read.
The presidents also discussed the situation in Syria's northeast and in the Idlib de-escalation zone, with Putin informing Macron about militants preparing chemical weapon provocations, according to the statement.
"While exchanging views on Ukraine, Vladimir Putin drew Emmanuel Macron's attention to the intensified anti-Russian campaign of the Ukrainian authorities in the context of the upcoming presidential election in March," the statement said.
During the talks, the sides also spoke about the willingness to work together within the so-called Normandy format on the Ukrainian settlement, according to the Kremlin.
