National interests must always be protected, but countries like Russia, which is under US sanctions, or China, which is currently in trade war with the United States should not react spontaneously to avoid the deterioration of the situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.
SOCHI (Russia) (UrduPoint news / Sputnik - 18th October, 2018) National interests must always be protected, but countries like Russia, which is under US sanctions, or China, which is currently in trade war with the United States should not react spontaneously to avoid the deterioration of the situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.
"It seems to me that we do not need to react spontaneously to some things that could exacerbate the situation, but, of course, we must always respond and defend our interests. We do this, both China and Russia," Putin said at the Valdai Discussion Club forum in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Putin stressed that the ongoing trade war between China and the United States may seriously affect global economy as the exchange of "trade strikes" could ultimately amount to over $1 trillion.
"This would be one of the reasons for the further downfall of the global economy, it will affect everyone, no one is interested in this," he said.
Putin added that those who initiate trade wars or sanctions always suffer from their actions, adding that the ongoing political struggle in the United States clearly affects Washington's foreign trade policies.
"In the medium term, such actions can cause some kind of positive effect, but in the long run, in my opinion, there will inevitably be negative consequences. Because what is being done is reflected in the economy," the president said.
