Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev, who announced his resignation, by phone on Tuesday, but the content of the conversation is unknown, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said
Nazarbayev said earlier in the day he had decided to resign as head of state from March 20. Kazakh Senate speaker Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will be Kazakhstan's acting president.
"This afternoon there was a telephone conversation between Putin and Nazarbayev. At the same time, we do not yet have information about the content of this conversation. Therefore, we do not give any comments on that now," Peskov said.
