DOHA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) Qatar welcomes the agreements on Syrian Idlib reached by Russia and Turkey, the guarantor states of the ceasefire regime in Syria, and believes the decision will promote security in the area, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to set up a demilitarized zone in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib by October 15. Russian military police and Turkish forces will be patrolling the demilitarized zone in Idlib along the contact line between the armed opposition and the government troops. All heavy weaponry operated by rebel groups must be pulled out of the demilitarized zone by October 10, the agreement stipulates.
"Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs [Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani] praised the Russian-Turkish agreement on establishing a demilitarized zone in Idlib city of Syria saying the agreement will stop the bloodshed in the city.
His Excellency further stressed the State of Qatar's stance, which calls for solving the Syrian issue under the related UN resolutions in a way that realizes peace and transitional justice for the Syrian people," the statement said.
Syria has been devastated by years of violent civil war that has prompted millions to flee hostilities to other locations within the country or abroad. The international community has taken efforts to settle the conflict by conducting political settlement talks in Geneva and reconciliation negotiations in Astana.
