Record 44 Candidates Register for Presidential Race in Ukraine - Election Commission

As many as 44 candidates - an all-time record for Ukraine - have registered for the upcoming presidential election as the registration process for those wanting to enter the race has officially ended, the chairperson of Ukraine's Central Election Commission (CEC) said on Friday

KIEV (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 08th February, 2019) As many as 44 candidates - an all-time record for Ukraine - have registered for the upcoming presidential election as the registration process for those wanting to enter the race has officially ended, the chairperson of Ukraine's Central Election Commission (CEC) said on Friday.

The presidential election is scheduled for March 31. The campaign was launched on December 31, 2018 along with the registration of candidates.

"A total of 44 candidates have registered [for the presidential race] as of today, there are 20 independent candidates, while another 24 [people] represent political parties," Tetiana Slipachuk told a briefing.

According to the commission's chairperson, the youngest candidate is 37 years old, while the oldest one is 75.

The leader of the Ukrainian political party Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) and former Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, led the polls for several months but was outrun in late January by comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
