WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 08th October, 2022) The Republican Party threatens to seize both chambers of US Congress in the November 8 midterm elections, with a commanding edge in a sufficient number of House races, while the Senate map looks like a toss-up, poll data aggregated by Real Clear politics (RCP) reveals.
US voters go to the polls in one month to cast ballots in the midterm elections, with the Democratic Party's narrow control of Congress hanging in the balance. 34 of the 100 seats in the US Senate - and all 435 House seats - are up for election this year, in addition to statewide and local positions.
As of Friday night, the RCP map, which is based on a compilation of the most recent polls, shows Republican candidates clearly leading in 220 House races, versus 180 for the Democrats, with 35 of the contests considered toss-ups.
If the election were held today, based on the polling data, the Republicans would end up controlling 47 Senate seats versus 46 for the Democrats, with 7 races categorized as too close to call. Republican candidates are winning by slim margins in four of the seven toss-up contests, according to the RCP data.
Only 218 seats are required to win the majority in the House, which the Democrats currently control by eight seats. The Senate is currently split 50-50 but the Democrats have the edge with Vice President Kamala Harris representing the tie-breaking vote.
