PARIS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) France is not currently considering the possibility of resuming diplomatic ties between Paris and Damascus because the civil conflict in the Arab country is still ongoing, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Friday.

"The re-establishment of diplomatic relations with Syria is not on the agenda yet. The [Syrian civil] war is not over yet," the minister told the BFMTV broadcaster.

After Syria's conflict began, dozens of countries, including numerous Arab states, France and the United States, severed diplomatic relations with Damascus and closed or relocated their embassies in the country.

The situation slightly improved in December when the United Arab Emirates reopened its embassy in the Syrian capital. Soon afterwards, Bahrain and Kuwait announced that they would restore their diplomatic missions in Syria as well.
