Rome's Ciampino Airport Evacuated After Smoke Detected

Rome's Ciampino airport was evacuated as a precaution after smoke was discovered coming out of the basement on Tuesday morning, the airport authority, ADR, said

ROME (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th February, 2019) Rome's Ciampino airport was evacuated as a precaution after smoke was discovered coming out of the basement on Tuesday morning, the airport authority, ADR, said.

"The Ciampino terminal has been temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Smoke was seen in an underground area, which caused no harm to passengers or infrastructure," the ADR tweeted.

In a statement in Italian, the authority said that the incident took place at 8 a.m. (07:00 GMT). It affected flights within the borderless Schengen area. The airport's online schedule was blank at the time of writing.

Ciampino was inaugurated in 1916 and is one of Italy's oldest airports still in use. It was evacuated less than two weeks ago when construction workers discovered a World War II-era bomb on its territory.
