Rosatom Plans to Build Research Reactors in Zambia, South Africa, Ghana - Foreign Ministry

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom plans to construct research nuclear reactors in Zambia, South Africa, Ghana and possibly in other countries of the African continent, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department of Africa Oleg Ozerov said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th December, 2018) Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom plans to construct research nuclear reactors in Zambia, South Africa, Ghana and possibly in other countries of the African continent, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department of Africa Oleg Ozerov said Wednesday.

"Currently Rosatom has plans for the construction of research nuclear reactors, and not only in one country. Besides Zambia and South Africa, there are other countries ... Ghana, possibly Ethiopia, Nigeria," Ozerov said at a Valdai Discussion Club expert meeting on the topic of "Russia's Return to Africa: Interests, Challenges, Prospects.

According to the diplomat, the digital economy, infrastructure and agriculture can also become promising areas for cooperation between Russia and African countries.

In July, Rusatom Healthcare, the healthcare division of Rosatom, and the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) signed an agreement on the construction of two so-called fuel solution nuclear reactors for production of radioisotopes in South Africa, which would be used in medicine.
