WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein suggested last year that he secretly wear a wire to record President Donald Trump and also discussed invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, US media reported on Friday.
Rosenstein made the suggestions to individuals at the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) shortly after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey in the Spring of 2017, The New York Times reported, citing officials who requested anonymity in order to discuss internal deliberations.
In a statement issued to The New York Times, Rosenstein strongly denied the allegations, calling the story "inaccurate and factually incorrect" and accusing the newspaper of quoting "biased" sources who were "advancing their own personal agenda.
"
However, a Justice Department spokeswoman provided a statement from a person who heard Rosenstein suggest wearing a wire but said the remark was made sarcastically, the report added.
Rosenstein reportedly said that the secret recording would serve to expose the dysfunction in the White House, including the process of hiring a new FBI Director, which Trump was conducting at that time.
Some officials suggested to the the New York Times that the comments were an example of Rosenstein's erratic behavior during a time when he was Acting Director of the FBI, trying to choose a special counsel, and participating in interviews with potential FBI Director candidates.
However, the report said no one ever acted on Rosenstein's suggestions.
