Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday invited the United States to engage in direct negotiations and called on Washington to refrain from imposing new sanctions against Tehran.

"UN Security Council Resolution 2231 is not a piece of paper. We invite you to return to that resolution. We invite you to come back to the negotiating table you left," Rouhani said in an address at the United Nations General Assembly in which he urged Washington not to "engage in imposing sanctions."
