WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) expects outgoing Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to continue supporting the integration project, Russian Assistant Minister for Integration and Macroeconomics, Fedor Chernitsyn, told Sputnik on Tuesday.
Nazarbayev announced his resignation earlier in the day in a televised address to the nation. A presidential election in Kazakhstan is planned to take place in 2020.
"We expect that Nazarbayev will continue to provide his paternal care about the Eurasian Integration project," Chernitsyn said. "I personally believe that this project will be incomplete without him."
The Russian minister said the EEC does not expect any dramatic changes as a result of Nazarbayev's decision.
"We think that everything will occur in a peaceful manner," Chernitsyn said.
"We are an economic organization and we don't deal with any political or military issues. We will continue to build common markets but of course paying maximum respect to President Nazarbayev as he is the patriarch of the Eurasian Integration. He was the one of those who created the very idea of the Eurasian integration project."
Nazarbayev said he would retain the post of the head of the country's Security Council and leader of the Nur Otan party and remain a member of the Constitutional Council.
Nazarbayev, 78, held a number of senior posts in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, which was a part of the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Nazarbayev remained in power, becoming president of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan.
