Russia Friday said Armenia should resolve its domestic problems legally on the basis of its constitution and through consultations among its political forces
MOSCOW,(APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th May, 2018 ) :Russia Friday said Armenia should resolve its domestic problems legally on the basis of its constitution and through consultations among its political forces.
"We are in favour of resolving domestic problems existing in fraternal Armenia on the basis of the country's constitution, in the legal field, and through constructive dialogue between various political forces of the republic," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing, Xinhua reported.
Armenia, once part of the former Soviet Union, experienced weeks of protests and civil disobedience over the deteriorating economy, which forced Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan to resign on April 23.
The protests were led by opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan, who is eyeing the prime minister's post. He was the only candidate to run for prime minister Tuesday but his bid failed as parliament gave him only 45 votes, short of the 53 needed.
A new election is scheduled for May 8 and Pashinyan will contest again. Armenia is a close ally of Russia in the South Caucasus, where Moscow has a military base.
